Coming Full Circle Through Home For A Home
Joel Vendette, a REALTOR® with the Indian Wells office of Bennion Deville Homes, has proudly been a member of non-profit organization Home For A Home since 2015 and now serves as the Executive Director. Home For A Home provides a “full circle” opportunity for real estate professionals by building homes for families in Guatemala. The organization is having its annual fundraiser at Morton’s The Steakhouse in San Francisco on Thursday, September 28th. Bennion Deville Homes is proudly sponsoring the fundraising event. Tickets to the event are available on the One Cause website. Use promo code H4H23_BDHomes for 10% off the ticket price.
Founded in 2012, Home For A Home is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization driven by the concept that a safe, solid home can be the catalyst for dramatic, positive change in people’s lives. The organization’s mission is to provide homes for people in need and was created by real estate professionals as a vehicle to relieve suffering and provide hope. When someone joins Home For A Home, they commit to funding homes for families in need. The structures are simple yet solid, and include a main living room, water filtration system, high efficiency woodburning stove, a bunk bed, and a bag of groceries as a housewarming gift.
For real estate professionals like Joel, Home For A Home offers the perfect way to pair their passion for helping others accomplish their real estate goals with the spirit of philanthropy and the fundamental human need for shelter. “Looking for a way to give back, I came across Home For A Home and found it to be the most full circle thing I could do,” Joel says. “I get to help people buy and sell their homes, and through that effort, help a family in need have a safe place to call home. As a member I have funded three homes. It is an incredible feeling to know that you are making a positive impact on a family’s quality of life. It goes far beyond what we see when you consider the emotional and mental aspects of knowing your family is safe. I am proud to know I can help other families in such a profound and meaningful way.”
As someone who continues to build a successful career helping clients purchase and sell properties, Joel has also formed a newfound appreciation for what “home” means to him and to others through his involvement with Home For A Home. “For me, home means safety and family. It’s a place where I get to feel secure in my surroundings and completely at ease. As a member of Home For A Home, the concept of ‘home’ has taken on a greater meaning. As real estate agents, we see the importance of home from many different perspectives. Yet, when you are helping families have concrete floors instead of dirt, or walls made from cinder blocks and not made of corn stalks, you realize how life changing it can be. For what it costs to help build these homes it is worth every penny.”
Adds Bennion Deville Homes C.E.O. Bob Deville, “We are proud of Joel’s work with Home For A Home and are honored to help the organization reach its goal of raising $200,000 at the upcoming fundraiser. Understanding and learning about the living conditions of people in other parts of our world is humbling and makes any of our daily troubles seem insignificant in comparison. At a fundamental level a house is shelter, but it comes to represent so much more and can completely change the trajectory of someone’s life. Supporting organizations like Home For A Home and the life-altering benefit they provide is inspiring, and it is our honor to help. We wish Joel and everyone at Home For A Home a successful event in September and look forward to hearing more as they continue their mission to provide shelter through their much-needed program.”
About Home For A Home
Home For A Home is a social business non-profit, founded by Nick Cooper in the San Francisco Bay Area in 2012. Nick wanted to use his successful real estate business to help people in need of shelter. Pairing real estate professionals and families in need creates a natural charity opportunity to give back, and as a result, the network of Home For A Home member agents is rapidly growing.
Home For A Home has developed an effective model of drawing donations from real estate transactions and using the funds to build safe, solid homes. In the past 10 years, Home For A Home has invested over $1 million in improved housing solutions for more than 500 families in Guatemala. The results have been life-changing, with entire communities transformed as more families establish permanent roots and work together to build a better future for their community.
There are three main ways to get involved with Home For A Home: Become a member, work with a member, or donate directly. If you are interested in learning more about Home For A Home or becoming involved, visit HomeForAHome.org.
