A Legacy of Giving: Sherry Cherlin’s Impact on the Local Community

Since she has been old enough to volunteer Sherry has taken an active role in her community, dedicating her time and resources for causes she cares about deeply. “My heart always gravitated toward helping children,” she says. “I became a candy striper at the local hospital in New York when I was a teenager and have been active in giving back ever since. Children’s charities and real estate are the biggest hats I’ve worn because I am so passionate about both.”

Sherry has been involved as a board member of Big Hearts for Little Hearts Desert Guild since 2007 and currently serves as Cooking Chair for the organization’s annual “Lunch and Learn” events. “We pick a top country club or restaurant in the Coachella Valley and partner with them to host a cooking demonstration with their chef followed by lunch. We also have a doctor or someone else of importance from Loma Linda speak and address what’s happening at the hospital.” The most recent event was held in March at Le Vallauris in Palm Springs and drew about 100 guests. There was also an earlier event held at BIGHORN Golf Club in January. Proceeds from the lunch events support Loma Linda University Children’s Hospital and its satellite clinic in Indio, which opened last year.

Sherry is also a committee member of Hearts of Hope, a special committee of the Big Hearts for Little Hearts Desert Guild that organized and oversaw a “Girls, Guys, and Giving” event centering on an auction of painted heart sculptures by California artists. Two 42” hearts were sold as part of the auction and 12 smaller hearts were sold outside of the auction format, along with fashion items, to raise money. “It was a lot of hard work but well worth it in the end. We raised $100,000 which will go toward the hospital and clinic. Everyone had a wonderful time shopping and participating in the auction, which had a ton of really nice items in addition to the hearts.”

Additionally, Sherry helped organize a recent Hug A Teddy Bear function, where a donation of $30 gives a child in the hospital a bear, and a friend to get them through what is often the most difficult chapter of their young lives. “The children get to pick out their bear, accessorize it with different outfits, and name it. Having that bear is sometimes the greatest source of comfort experienced by the kids and their parents during their stay in the hospital, so that money goes a long way toward providing some happiness to a child and their family.” As a part of each fundraiser, the hospital does as much as possible to set up visits to the main Loma Linda campus and its clinic in Indio. “We want people to see the facilities and know they are supporting a worthy cause with their generous donations.”

Long before she moved to the Coachella Valley full time in 2006, Sherry Cherlin’s legacy of philanthropy started in her home state of New York. She helped found Children’s Medical Center Fund, an organization that supports Cohen Children’s Medical Center. “I am proud of being a founding member of Children’s Medical Center Fund. We have done so many incredible things for families over the years and helped impact so many lives through those efforts.”

Sherry Cherlin has been representing home buyers and sellers, as well as investors, since 1988 and is a consistent top-producing real estate agent. In addition to her real estate sales license, she is a Certified Luxury Home Marketing Specialist™.
