Alex Dethier Combines Passion For Tech and Homes to Serve Clients
Alex Dethier, REALTOR®, of The Paul Kaplan Group continues to build a successful business by blending marketing and technology, a passion for people and homes, and his love of the desert. What started with the purchase of a Mid-Century Modern fixer as a reprieve from the hustle and bustle of Bay Area living has turned into a thriving career in real estate. His ability to combine his career experience in high tech marketing with his love of homes and helping others has keyed his ascent as one of Palm Springs’ most well-known and respected real estate professionals.
Alex was introduced to the sleek and stylish world of Mid-Century Modern architecture in 2010 when he and his wife purchased a small mid-century modern fixer in Movie Colony East as a project. “The plan was to fix up the house and use it as a vacation home for weekend getaways from our full-time home in the Bay Area. We spent a year working remotely from Palm Springs, in a rental in Sunrise Park, while we fixed up the home, with plans to return to the Bay Area after work was completed. After six months of living in Palm Springs we decided to make the move permanent, we just loved it here too much,” he says with a laugh. And by that point, they had really enjoyed living in Sunrise Park and, as it happened, the landlord of their rental decided to sell them their mid-century Meiselman home, so they sold the fixer and settled in Sunrise Park, which has now been their home for nearly 10 years.
Before he found himself living the highly desirable desert life as a full-time real estate professional, Alex built a career in marketing and technology in the Bay Area of Northern California. He parlayed his experience as an Art Director and Designer at a large magazine into executing the corporate marketing strategies for Sun Microsystems in Silicon Valley. “I helped with the Sun rebrand and developed online tools for internal and external use, some of which are still in use today. One of the projects I was involved in was leading the technical development of a tool that allowed companies to manage and calculate their carbon footprint, working with the Environmental Protection Agency, which was a very fun, interesting, and rewarding experience,” Alex adds. Alex’s strong instincts for blending marketing strategies with technology, honed during his previous career, create a streamlined process for his clients and allow him to attract the right buyers for the homes he represents.
After making the permanent move to Palm Springs, Alex earned his real estate sales license in 2013 and dove into the business headfirst. By leveraging his laid-back personality, love of architecture, and marketing and tech backgrounds, Alex continues to build a unique business driven by creating positive results for his clients. “When I first moved to Palm Springs, I used my background in high tech marketing and attempted to be a consultant for real estate agents to help them with highly targeted online marketing solutions. I realized that the tools I created would help me thrive in this business, so I got my real estate license. I also wanted to develop relationships with more people so getting into real estate was a natural next step,” Alex continues. He has helped more clients year-over-year since becoming a real estate professional, a testament to the quality of experience he provides and his ability to successfully complete deals. “When you love what you do, you work hard, and I love what I do. Real estate is so much fun because it involves doing more than just one thing, it’s not repetitive, and it’s interesting. I am always absorbing and learning new things, and I get to meet new people from all walks of life, some of which have become close personal friends.”
After earning his license, Alex quickly went to work familiarizing himself with the area’s many neighborhoods and unique qualities. He created his own study materials describing each community, including any prominent architectural notes, lifestyle amenities, and other important details he would need to pass on to his clients. Using the notes he created to help familiarize himself with Palm Springs, he built a website dedicated to serving clients who are focused on purchasing condos in the Greater Palm Springs Area, PSCondos.com. After establishing PSCondos.com as a leading resource for the general public to learn more about the area’s condominium communities, Alex created PSHomes.com with the same principles of developing a site geared toward a high-quality user experience. “I curate all of the information on the websites, including the properties, and provide details with each listing such as the style of the home. Many people are searching for homes from out of the area so the richer the detail I can provide, the better for them to make an informed decision and narrow down their options before they arrive,” Alex continues.
As a desert transplant, Alex relishes the opportunity to work with clients who are familiarizing themselves with the Coachella Valley and to share his own personal story of discovering the exceptional quality of life. “I think it hit us one day when we were able to park in front of the restaurant we were going to without any hassle. The pace of life is so easy here, there are more opportunities to build a strong social network and my wife and I can spend more quality time together because we don’t have hours-long commutes each day.” With some of that newfound free time, Alex and his wife are dedicated to giving back to the Palm Springs Animal Shelter and Living Free Animal Sanctuary, two organizations that look out for the welfare of animals. In addition to enjoying the desert life, Alex and his wife purchased a home “up the hill” in Idyllwild. “I love having a retreat just an hour away in the mountains. It makes for a nice getaway and a place to reset mentally. That is one of the nice parts about living in the desert – drive for an hour in either direction and you can be in a totally different setting.”
With a passion for helping others and the know-how to execute for his clients, Alex Dethier continues to build a strong business through hard work, dedication, and an open, friendly attitude. Although his path to real estate wasn’t direct, now that he is on it, he is charging full speed ahead.
