If you look up “Mid-Century Modern” on Wikipedia, you will find a whole section devoted to the Palm Springs area. One reason for that is that you can find examples from most of the architects associated with the mid-century modern style. Think William F. Cody, Albert Frey, John Lautner, Richard Neutra, Donald Wexler, Frank Lloyd Wright – and you still wouldn’t be naming half of them!
Another reason would be Palm Springs Modernism Week, which launches today for its 7th year as a stand-alone event. Palm Springs Modernism week has grown to an 11-day extravaganza attracting tens of thousands of visitors from around the world. Additionally, there is an abundance of design shops, boutique retail and high-end consignments stores that cater to the avid mid-century furnishings shoppers throughout the desert resort cities. The mid-century modern buzz continues to grow nationwide with the sustained success of the TV show “Mad Men” and even the short-lived series “Pan Am” and “The Playboy Club.”
It’s a Wonderful … Home
With the hubbub over all things modern and mid-century, our second installment of Windermere Classic Homes takes you to the La Quinta Country Club (just a few miles and cities down valley from Palm Springs) to the former home of Academy Award-winning director Frank Capra listed with Windermere’s Jennie Robinson.
This stunning example of mid-century design by A. Quincy Jones, who also designed the Annenberg Retreat at Sunnylands, is perfectly situated on the 10th hole and features inspiring views of the Santa Rosa Mountains, signature palm trees as well as the fairway which can be viewed from the private pool and spa. Measuring over 4,200 square feet, the home has 4 bedrooms and 4 baths and takes full advantage of the natural light from the southern exposure. The spacious living room has 14-foot beamed ceiling and a floor-to-ceiling fireplace accented with beautiful stone and a sunken wet bar.
